Gallery

Welcome

Jane's Art Center, nestled within the charming Canal Street Historic District of New Smyrna Beach, made its debut on the city's thriving art scene back in 2018. From the very beginning, Jane's Art Center set its sights on a distinctive artistic path, with a primary focus on the realm of fine ceramics.

This strategic decision not only showcased the center's dedication to the craft but also enriched the local arts community with a unique offering.

Over the years, Jane's Art Center has grown into a creative haven, drawing artists and enthusiasts alike to explore the boundless possibilities of ceramics and beyond, cementing its place as a treasured cultural gem in New Smyrna Beach.

The Space

The distinctive gallery space represents a range of work from artists from local to national prominence.  Dedicated to learning and creative growth, the heart of Jane's, though, is the clay studio.  With comprehensive facilities and top-notch instructors, the educational opportunities at Jane's offer both beginner and experienced potters the chance to advance their skills in a supportive environment.

Time and Transformation –  sculpture by Roger Questel

Roger sees sculpture as a way to develop a narrative using tools, materials and his hands. He is drawn to the notion of revealing the passage of time either through a visual narrative, a sense of motion or the textures and signatures of age. Roger is a Parson’s School of Design Graduate and began his career as a designer and wood sculptor in New York City. Roger has been commissioned by many renowned clients including Orson Wells, Ralph Lauren, Gordon Getty and Carly Simon. In 1990, while seeking to cast his sculptures in bronze, he invented a lightweight and affordable metal composite material: Questech. Questech Metal took on a life of its own when Roger patented his innovation and founded Questech Corporation. In 1991, the Smithsonian Institute inducted Questech Metal into its permanent collection of innovative materials at the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design. Recently, Roger has rediscovered a passion for wood and ceramic sculpture while working in his barn studio in North Adams, Massachusetts, and in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Time and Transformation: Alchemy Series –  drawings and paintings by Ellen Questel

The twelve works in this series were inspired by the broad themes that run through medieval alchemy. When Ellen first encountered this ancient tradition, it was as if she had found a kind of Rosetta Stone with which to translate strange and baffling dream images and in turn explore how these images relate to individual growth and transformation. Her original artwork was executed in gold leaf, pastel and watercolor. Each image is paired with fragments of her poetry.

Opening from 4-7pm. Exhibition through April 26. The Hub + Jane’s Members receive a 10% discount on all purchases of artwork throughout The Hub and Jane’s on 1st Saturday. Ellen will lead her Artist Talk on Thursday, March 27, 5:30-6:30pm. Roger will lead his Artist Talk on Saturday, March 29, 11am-Noon. Fee: Free and open to the public. Wine and beer available for purchase.
